About the Work

In this annotated copy of Lonesome Dove belonging to Bill Wittliff, award-winning screenwriter, author and photographer, the remarks in red ink illustrate the screenwriter’s preparatory thoughts on key words, settings, dialogue that will interpret the novel’s narration and props to be fabricated. From this first page, one gets a hint at the recurring role the blue pigs are going to play in the miniseries.

Wittliff’s goal was to tell McMurtry’s great novel as film. He stated that “great art . . . reminds you of something you already knew . . . . We had an awful lot of Texas guys in the cast and crew and all of them felt like this was their story. If you were a Texan, this was your bible . . . . Everybody loved Larry’s book and everybody felt like . . . those characters were them, or their uncles, or their grandfathers.”
