Another Frontier: Frederic Remington's East | 2018 - 2019

Shifting the focus from Frederic Remington's popular Western imagery to his less familiar Eastern subjects, this special exhibition, Another Frontier: Frederic Remington's East, invites visitors to expand their knowledge of the context in which Remington worked, while gaining a deeper appreciation of his artistic talent.

Sid Richardson Museum Permanent Collection | 2018 - 2019

The art museum that bears Sid Richardson's name is dedicated to displaying his collection of Western paintings. The exhibition includes paintings by two of the most celebrated artists of the American West: Frederic Remington (1861-1909) and Charles M. Russell (1864-1926). Works by these two artists form the core of the collection, which includes early paintings by each artist, as well as later paintings produced at the height of their careers.

Frederic Remington: Altered States | 2017 - 2018

Frederic Remington: Altered States tells the provocative story of three paintings from the Museum's collection that were altered after completion: one demonstrates an artist's change, one demonstrates fraudulency, and one remains a mystery.

Legacy | 2017 - 2018

Legacy depicts the clash of cultures of the 19th century American West. The legacy of conflicts among cowboys, soldiers, explorers and Indigenous Americans during westward expansion continues to impact America today. The exhibition also celebrates Sid Richardson’s legacy of philanthropy and collecting art. The exhibition features 42 of the Museum’s dynamic paintings of the 19th century American West by Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell and their contemporaries along with three bronze sculptures by Remington and Russell and one Russell painting on loan from a private collection.

Hide & Horn on the Chisholm Trail | 2017

Hide & Horn is a cattle trail-era focus exhibition featuring collectors' items that honor and illuminate the greatest migration of livestock in world history. Displays include an 1873 trail map and guidebook for drovers, one of the four most important books on the cattle industry and one of the best books about the Texas Longhorn cattle breed during the 19th century. Visitors will view rarely seen items from the Sid Richardson Museum’s permanent collection as well as “Guests of Honor” items on loan from the Rees-Jones Collection in Dallas and from another private collection.

Lonesome Dove: The Art of Story | 2016

Lonesome Dove: The Art of Story, traces the path of Lonesome Dove from Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to the original screenplay and filming of the legendary TV miniseries. Visitors can explore the 19th century American West through iconic paintings and bronzes by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, a cowboy's 1868 cattle drive diary and materials from the Lonesome Dove production archives.

Remington & Russell, Retold | 2015 - 2016

Remington & Russell, Retold is a reconsidered pictorial survey of the exploration of the American West through the careers of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. The exhibition is as revealing about Sid W. Richardson, their collector, as it is of the two artists who created these works. Considering Richardson's collection, it would appear that he felt a kinship with the risk-takers who won the untamed West.

Take Two: George Catlin Revisits the West | 2014 - 2015

Take Two features 17 paintings from George Catlin's Cartoon Collection, showing the cultural life of the Native Americans he encountered in his travels. This special exhibition includes thirteen paintings that have never been exhibited in Texas.

Western Treasures | 2013 - 2014

Western Treasures reflected Sid Richardson’s fascination with the American West and affirmed his foresight in collecting paintings by the artists who best captured the spirit and history of our western frontier.  This special exhibition provided a unique opportunity to celebrate the strength of the collection and gain an appreciation of the early work of Russell, with emphasis on his affinity with the American Indian.

Violent Motion: Frederic Remington’s Artistry in Bronze | 2012 - 2013

Rarely seen bronze sculptures by Frederic Remington are featured in a special exhibition honoring our 30th anniversary. Mary Burke, Director of the Museum, explains that "Frederic Remington created 22 of the most memorable bronzes of any American sculptor of his time. He was the first American artist to depict such vitality in equestrian statues."

Charles M. Russell: Watercolorist | 2012

Sixteen rarely seen watercolors by Charles M. Russell are featured in a special exhibition honoring our 30th anniversary.  Mary Burke, Director of the Museum, explains that "Charlie Russell's watercolors will help people gain a greater appreciation for his skill as an artist. Although he is well known for his oil paintings, experts on Russell consider his watercolors to be among his finest efforts."
